Why We Flew to Aomori

We used JAL’s “Doko ka ni Mile” (どこかにマイル) — JAL’s mystery destination program where you spend fewer miles in exchange for letting JAL pick your destination from a shortlist. Aomori came up, and we jumped at it.

The catch? The program tends to assign less popular time slots, so we ended up on an early morning flight departing around 7 AM. Not ideal with a young child, but as it turned out, the short flight time made it very manageable.

At Haneda: Allow Extra Time for the Gate

One thing that caught us off guard: the boarding gate for the Aomori flight was far. From the security checkpoint, we walked for a solid 8 minutes before reaching our gate. With a young child in tow, that felt like a long trek — especially at 6-something in the morning.

Our advice: Don’t assume you’ll breeze through to the gate. Give yourself plenty of buffer time after clearing security.

The good news? There are plenty of shops along the way. We passed multiple JAL gift shops and a Tully’s Coffee, so even after security you can grab a drink, pick up snacks, or do some last-minute souvenir shopping. You won’t feel rushed — as long as you’ve left enough time for the walk.

The Flight: Short and Sweet

The flight from Haneda to Aomori takes about 1 hour. For families, this is ideal — it’s short enough that you barely need to think about in-flight entertainment strategies.

We were on a Boeing 767 with 2-3-2 seating. Our family of three sat in the middle three seats, which worked well — our daughter was sandwiched between us, and we didn’t need to worry about her disturbing anyone by the window or aisle.

We had videos downloaded on an iPad just in case, and she watched those quietly for most of the flight. Honestly, by the time we’d taken off, had a drink, and started to settle in, it was already time to descend.

Wi-Fi and Power

The seats had both a USB-A and USB-C port, which was handy for charging devices. JAL also offers in-flight Wi-Fi, and on our flight it connected smoothly — though that may have been because the early morning flight was fairly empty. Don’t count on it for streaming, but it worked fine for messaging and browsing.

JAL’s Family-Friendly Touches

A couple of things stood out:

  • Sky Time juice: JAL serves a special grape-and-peach juice blend called Sky Time, available only on their flights. Our daughter loved it — and honestly, it’s become one of her flight rituals now. If your child likes sweet, fruity drinks, ask for it.
  • Plane model toy: The cabin crew gave our daughter a small JAL plane model. A small gesture, but it kept her happily occupied and made the flight feel special.

JAL also offers baby blankets, picture books, and spare diapers on domestic flights, though we didn’t need any of these on such a short hop.

Arriving at Aomori Airport

If you’ve only ever flown into major Japanese airports like Haneda, Narita, or Kansai, Aomori Airport will feel refreshingly small and simple. This is a compact, single-terminal regional airport where everything is within a short walk.

What’s Inside

Arrivals (1F):
– Baggage claim is quick — we had our bags within minutes
– There’s a convenience store right in the arrivals area, handy for grabbing water, snacks, or supplies before heading out
Clean restrooms — always a relief when traveling with kids
– Information desk just outside the arrivals hall

Departures (2F):
Tully’s Coffee and a food court are available before security
– If you’re catching a lunchtime departure, you can comfortably eat a full meal at the airport — no need to rush lunch before heading there
– Souvenir shops with Aomori apple products and regional goods

Observation Deck (3F):
– If you arrive early for your return flight, the 3rd-floor observation deck offers runway views. A nice way to kill time with kids who love watching planes.

Getting from Aomori Airport: Rental Cars Win

This is where Aomori Airport really shines for families.

At most Japanese airports, picking up a rental car means waiting for a shuttle bus, riding 10–15 minutes to an off-site lot, and then doing paperwork before you can finally get on the road. With kids, luggage, and car seats, that process can easily eat up 30–45 minutes.

At Aomori Airport? You walk.

Major rental car companies — Toyota, ORIX, Nippon, Times, Nissan — are all within 2–3 minutes on foot from the terminal. Toyota Rent a Car is literally about 50 meters away. You step outside, walk over, sign the paperwork, and you’re driving.

For us, this was one of the best things about the entire trip. No shuttle bus, no waiting around with a restless child. Just a quick walk and we were on our way to Hoshino Resort Aomoriya.

Other Transport Options

If you’re not renting a car:

  • JR Bus to Aomori Station: ~35 minutes, ¥860–980. Buses are timed to flight arrivals. Covered by JR East Pass.
  • Taxi: ~30 minutes to Aomori city center.
  • Private transfer: Available via GetYourGuide — sedan, minivan, or van options. Useful if you have a lot of luggage or want door-to-door service.

Tips for Families

  1. Leave extra time at Haneda. The gate for Aomori flights can be a long walk from security — budget at least 8–10 minutes just for walking.
  2. Don’t stress about pre-security shopping. There are Tully’s and JAL shops after security, so you can grab coffee and snacks on the way to the gate.
  3. Download entertainment, but don’t overdo it. The flight is only an hour. An iPad with a couple of downloaded shows is more than enough.
  4. Ask for Sky Time. JAL’s grape-and-peach juice is a kid favorite and only available on JAL flights. A small thing, but it makes the flight feel like an event.
  5. Book a rental car at Aomori Airport. The walkable rental car offices are a huge advantage for families. Skip the shuttle bus hassle you’d face at bigger airports.
  6. Arriving at lunchtime? Eat at the airport. Aomori Airport has a food court and Tully’s on the departure floor. It’s small but functional — you won’t go hungry.
  7. Check the observation deck. If you have time before your return flight, the 3rd floor has runway views that’ll keep plane-loving kids entertained.

Is It Worth Flying to Aomori?

Absolutely — especially for families based in Tokyo.

A 1-hour flight makes Aomori one of the easiest Tohoku destinations to reach with young children. The flight is short enough that even early morning departures are manageable, and Aomori Airport’s compact size and walkable rental cars remove so much of the friction that usually comes with flying as a family.

We paired this flight with stays at Hoshino Resort Aomoriya and Relabo at Aomori Station — and the whole trip felt smooth from start to finish. If you’re considering Aomori for a family trip, the JAL route from Haneda makes it surprisingly easy.
