That’s exactly what led us to the Singapore Zoo this past July 2024.

Was it worth battling the famous Singapore heat? And how did it stack up as a family-friendly destination? I’m sharing our honest review, complete with essential tips for anyone traveling with kids.
The Singapore Zoo is located in the Mandai Wildlife Reserve, in the northern part of Singapore, away from the city center. When traveling with kids, prioritizing comfort is key.
Access by Grab (Car)
For our visit, we used the ride-hailing app, Grab. From central Singapore (the Orchard or Marina areas) to the zoo, the journey usually takes about 25 to 35 minutes, depending on traffic. For families with small children, using Grab or a taxi is the most convenient and stress-free, door-to-door option.
Access by Public Transport
If you are looking to save on transportation costs, taking the MRT (subway) and a shuttle bus is a great alternative.
MRT: First, take the North South Line (red line) on the MRT to Khatib Station.Shuttle Bus: Head out of Exit A at Khatib Station, where you will find the shuttle bus pickup point for the Singapore Zoo.
The total travel time from the city center is approximately 1 hour. While it takes longer than driving, it’s highly recommended for those who prioritize cost performance.

What truly sets the Singapore Zoo apart is its commitment to the “open concept” design. Forget seeing animals confined behind sterile bars; here, the enclosures utilize natural barriers like moats and vegetation. This creates an incredibly immersive environment where the animals feel closer than you can imagine.
My daughter was absolutely mesmerized. The highlight for her—and honestly, for me too—was the freedom of the animals. We had a stunning peacock strut right past us, completely unconcerned, displaying its magnificent tail feathers. In other areas, small, quick monkeys darted across the pathways right next to us. It truly felt like we were guests in their natural habitat, not just observing them from afar.
This close proximity is a game-changer for kids. It makes the experience deeply memorable and provides unparalleled photo opportunities that you simply won’t get at most traditional zoos.

Dealing with the Heat: Summer (July) Essentials
Let’s address the elephant in the room: the heat. Our visit in July was very hot , with high humidity typical of a tropical summer day. This is not a casual walk in the park; it requires strategic planning.
Hats and sun protection are absolutely mandatory. Furthermore, hydration is crucial. You can rest assured knowing there are stalls and shops scattered throughout the park, so you can carry your own drinks and still buy more as needed. I recommend making sure to hydrate frequently and take breaks often.
Navigating the Vast Park and Essential Rentals
The Singapore Zoo is massive and sprawling, covering a wide area that requires a significant amount of walking. For kids, especially toddlers and preschoolers, mobility assistance is essential if you want to make it through the entire day without carrying a tired child.

Strollers are available for the little ones.Wheelchairs are available for guests needing assistance.The absolute lifesaver for us were the wagon carts. These fit two small children comfortably. Knowing that my daughter had a spot to rest her feet between exhibits—and that I didn’t have to carry her—was invaluable. Given that the zoo is very spacious, budgeting for a wagon cart rental is the best investment you can make for a stress-free visit.
Exhibits, Shows, and Comfort Stops
Must-See Animals and the Aquatic Show
The variety of animals at the Singapore Zoo is impressive. We saw majestic elephants, playful animals in the monkey enclosures, and, as mentioned, the beautiful roaming peacocks. Every habitat is beautifully maintained and designed to mimic natural environments, which enhances the viewing experience.
We made sure to catch the Sea Lion Show, and it was fantastic! The presentation was engaging, and the animals were obviously well-cared for. Watching the talented sea lions dive and perform tricks in the water felt less like a zoo show and more like a visit to an aquarium. It was a high-energy, fun break from walking and provided great entertainment for the whole family.
Dining and Restroom Report
Food: Near the main gate, there is a large, food court-like area where you can grab meals and snacks before or after your entry. There was also a tempting ice cream shop, which was a non-negotiable stop for us in the heat! Be aware that much of this dining area is outdoors, so on a hot day in July 2024, it’s not the coolest place to linger. You can find refreshment kiosks and other dining spots inside the zoo as well.Restrooms (Toilet Situation): As any parent traveling with kids knows, reliable bathroom facilities are crucial. I was happy to find that the restrooms were numerous and adequately maintained throughout the park. We didn’t have any major issues finding a clean facility when we needed one, which definitely makes a huge difference on a full-day excursion.

The Singapore Zoo is a world-class destination that provides an unparalleled family-friendly experience. The unique open-concept design means you get closer to the wildlife than almost anywhere else, and that connection is something both parents and kids will remember.
Despite the intense heat (a factor you absolutely must prepare for), the visit was a roaring success. The close peacock encounters, the excitement of the aquatic show, and the brilliant simplicity of renting a wagon cart to navigate the park made the day manageable and fun.
We didn’t get to go this time, but the Night Safari is also available and looks like so much fun, so we would love to visit it the next time we come.
